Checking a Newly Requeened Colony – With a Surprise!

Read Time:41 Second

While checking on a honeybee hive where the original queen recently swarmed and left behind queen cells for her replacement, the new queen was sighted as well as a couple of surprises towards the end!

One of the empty queen cells was approximately twice as long as normal. It really seemed like it may have been two queen cells that were merged, but in fact it was actually one very long queen cell. While pulling this used queen cell off of the frame, a nearby pupa was exposed and two varroa distructor mites were seen crawling across the young bee.

Off camera, the pupa and two mites were removed from the frame, with the mites being smashed into a hive lid so not to get back into the hive.
